How This Water Pump Fuel Calculator Works
Fuel consumption is calculated using the formula:
Fuel (litres) = HP × SFC × Hours × Load Factor
- SFC (Specific Fuel Consumption) values used are real-world averages from Indian 5-20 HP pumpsets.
- 80% load is typical for irrigation (pump rarely runs at 100% continuously).
Average Fuel Consumption Reference (at Full Load)
| HP | Diesel (L/hour) | Petrol (L/hour) | Kerosene (L/hour) |
| 5 HP | 1.0 – 1.1 L | 1.8 – 2.0 L | 1.7 – 1.9 L |
| 7.5 HP | 1.5 – 1.7 L | 2.7 – 3.0 L | 2.6 – 2.9 L |
| 10 HP | 2.0 – 2.3 L | 3.6 – 4.0 L | 3.4 – 3.8 L |
Fuel Saving Tips for Water Pumps
- Use the correctly sized pump for your requirement (oversized pumps waste fuel).
- Clean air filter and fuel filter regularly.
- Use proper suction and delivery pipe diameters to reduce friction loss.
- Avoid unnecessary throttling — run pump at rated RPM.
- Consider solar pumps for daytime irrigation to save 100% fuel.
